Whether you’re new to West Coast Swing or looking to deepen your understanding, these are some of the most common questions I’m asked along the way.
What is West Coast Swing?
West Coast Swing is a partner dance known for its smooth, elastic style and versatility. It can be danced to a wide range of music—from blues and R&B to pop and contemporary.
Do I need a partner to take classes?
No. Most classes rotate partners, which helps you learn faster and become a more adaptable dancer.
Can I learn both lead and follow roles?
Yes—and it’s encouraged. Learning both roles builds stronger connection, timing, and empathy as a partner.
What should I wear to class?
Comfortable clothing and shoes that allow you to move easily. Avoid overly sticky soles—smooth or suede shoes are best for turning.
What is social dancing?
Social dancing is informal dancing outside of class or competition—usually at events or local venues. It’s where you practice, connect, and have fun.
